About the Project

The Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment (CDPHE) is the lead agency for remediation of the Summitville Mine site. Part of the remediation process is an impoundment dam that captures runoff water from the mining area before flowing downstream. The impoundment dam has outlet controls where these are exposed to harsh chemicals.

DES provided design and construction services to the CDPHE for the dam outlet controls. The existing headgate were of cast-iron material. In providing replacement headgates, a stainless material was used to provide protection against the harsh environment. DES worked with a headgate manufacturer to develop the new headgates to fit the existing configuration, developed technical specifications and design plans. DES also provide construction services during the repair work.
